When it comes to renting one of our vehicles, it is highly likely that the seat will not be positioned correctly for you, and it is important that you adjust this. Non-dependent on whether you have a long journey ahead or a brief drive up the road, your seating position is extremely important for preventing injury or pain.

The importance of finding the perfect seating position

Did you know, in the UK, back pain is almost as common as the standard cold? According to the British Chiropractic Association, over 40% of drivers agree that driving aggravates or worsens their neck or back pain, and a further 14% say that driving can trigger it, even when experiencing no pain before. Finding the correct seating position can prevent pain and discomfort on the road for everyone – but how do you find it?

How to find the correct seating position for you

There is no right or wrong when it comes to your seating position – it is simply what feels best for you. When you first climb into one of our vans, take a look through this guide. Take your time with the process, it will be worth it when you leave the vehicle aches-and-pains free!

  1. When seated in neutral, test this first step. Press down on the clutch with your back firmly against the back of the chair. You should have a slight bend in your knee whilst doing this. Having straight legs will mean that you are reaching too far for the pedals, and as well as causing discomfort, this could risk an accident on the road due to a lack of control.
  2. The next step you can take to test that your driving position is correct involves your steering wheel. When reaching for it, you should find that your shoulders remain against the back of the seat and your elbows are slightly bent, no matter how much you turn the wheel.
  3. The height of your seat can also contribute to back pain or discomfort. If you are seated too low, you could find yourself having to stretch your back throughout your journey in an effort to see over the steering wheel and gain full view of the road ahead. Before setting off, raise your seat as high as it goes whilst ensuring that your feet are still able to reach the pedals comfortably.
  4. On the same note as above, you will need to make sure your mirrors are angled correctly. You should be able to see all of your mirrors without needing to turn your head too much – if at all – and your back and shoulders should remain pressed firmly and comfortably against the back of your seat.
  5. For additional comfort, you will find that there are controls that adjust the lumbar support of your chair. This will provide lower back support throughout your journey. Use the dial to adjust it so that it fits in with the natural curve of your spine.
  6. For neck support, you will need to ensure that your headrest is positioned correctly. You will have been taught this throughout your learning years, but it is a step that many of us unconsciously skip when climbing into a new vehicle. The top of the headrest should remain in line with the top of your head. As well as providing comfort, this positioning will provide next support if you ever find yourself in a position where you are needing to brake hard or take an unexpected impact from another vehicle.
